Prisoner of Time Soundtrack

Creative Notes by Martin T. Ingham

Putting together a musical soundtrack for a book is a "novel" concept. I am not aware of anyone else ever doing this before. I may be a bit eccentric to create such a compilation, but it's all part of a writer's artistic license. If the book ever becomes a movie, I hope some of these songs can make it onto that soundtrack.

I originally thought of selecting a song for each chapter of the book, but that proved too daunting a task. There simply isn't a song for each chapter, and in fact several of these songs are merely dedicated to part of a chapter, or to a representation of a character's state of mind.

Befitting my "lucky 13" theme, I have selected 13 excellent songs for this collection.

Warning: Spoilers below. If you haven't read the novel yet, you might want to do that before learning the secrets below!

1: "Half Asleep" by Matthew Sweet.
Opening Theme: In our future film, this would play behind the opening credits. The overall theme of the song fills out our initial setting; a world where the citizens are "half asleep" seeking the thrill of virtual entertainment.

2: "Haunted" by the Moody Blues.
Chapter 2, scene 2. This is indicative of Morgan's state of mind when thinking of Rheena Liszt. It is a song about the loss of a spouse or lover, and Morgan is most certainly "Haunted" by her love.

3: "Castles In The Air" by Don McLean.
Chapter 3ish. This is representative of Morgan's attitude toward the world, the reason he dropped out of fine society and moved to Montana; and it's indicative of his resistance to return with Alan Rome to Fantasan.

4: "Twilight" by Electric Light Orchestra.
Boot-in theme. This song is illustrative of booting-in, and the kind of sensations involved. "Am I awake or do I dream? The strangest pictures I have seen."

5: "Man In the Wilderness" by Styx.
Chapter 5: Song of the amnestic Traveler.

6: "So Sad About Us" by The Who.
Chapter 9, scene 2: Mariah's Song. This song is loosely based on the lost-opportunity of Morgan and Mariah's past relationship.

7: "Dust In the Wind" by Kansas.
Chapter 17, scene 1: It sets the mood for the following revelation!

8: "Tomorrow" by Matthew Sweet.
Chapter 20, overall theme. As Morgan ventures out into the world anew and discovers what "Tomorrow" has in store.

9: "Can't Fight This Feeling" by REO Speedwagon.
End of Chapter 20-beginning of Chapter 21: Morgan and Lorna's relationship blooms.

10: "Doubleback" by ZZ Top.
Chapter 22: Return to Fantasan.

11: "Do You Remember Me?" by Grace Slick.
Chapter 25, scene 5: Mariah's torment over Morgan, and what she wishes they'd had.

12: "World" by The Bee Gees.
Chapter 28, overall theme. As Morgan learns the final truths of things, and comes to terms with it all.

13: "Save Time For Me" by Matthew Sweet.
Closing Credits, and a shadow of things to come! "Morgan Asher will return in 'The Guns of Mars.'"

Well, there you have it. The best soundtrack to a novel that I've ever seen, or at least the best one I've come up with off the top of my head. Either way, it was a lot of fun, and I hope you enjoyed it.
